Parents
Becoming a father has been without a doubt the biggest life change I’ve undergone. It’s wonderful yes, but it’s also tough and exhausting. In many ways my little boy is constantly holding up a mirror to me and I see where I’m impatient, short tempered and even disinterested sometimes. It is ruthless and humbling to feel the weight of your shortcomings in the most important endeavor – being a good parent.
My parents are not perfect, and growing up I’ve realized there’s no such thing. Especially becoming one myself, I’m constantly reminded of my flaws and insecurities. But looking back across my short timeline, I know two things for sure about my parents… I have never doubted that they love me, and I’ve known they’ve always done their best. That’s what makes them great parents. That is my wish for my boy. For him to know he is loved and that we do our best for him.
Mike Tyson said something so profound in an interview…
“Your legacy is not what you accomplish, but what your kids say about you.”
I wrote these short letters to my parents before my son was born, and they are even more true today.
Mom,
In two weeks my boy arrives. I know I’ll be a good parent because you are a great one. I know what love, kindness and generosity is thanks to you. I’m not nervous or scared because of the example you’ve set, and all the life lessons you’ve passed on. The older I get the more I realize how lucky I am to call you mom. Many people say this, but in my case it’s true… I have the best mom in the world. You are selfless (sometimes too much) and are the definition of unconditional love that never ends. You will always be my mommy.
Love you, Greg
Dad,
I have never doubted your love for me, or that you are proud of me, or that you would do anything to help me if I needed it. That goes to show what a great dad you are. You have worked throughout your life so we could have the life and luxuries you never had, and have demonstrated what sacrifice and hard work is. Soon I’ll be a father and I am very lucky to have a role model like you. My sense of humor is thanks to you. My love of music is thanks to you. My desire to provide for my new family and to give them the best life possible is from your example. Thank you for everything.
Love you, Greg
If you're reading this, I encourage you to reach out to your parents and tell them you love and appreciate them. Not because they’re perfect, but because life is short and there is often lots unsaid.
